1) Cleveland 19 News meteorologist Jon Loufman — a familiar face on local TV for decades — is in the hospital and recovering from an attack that took place in his Bay Village home on Saturday, July 9. Police said Loufman's son, Daniel, was arrested and charged with felonious assault. A judge set bail Monday at $1 million. Loufman's wife, Julia, was arrested and charged with obstructing justice. Loufman was inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame 20 years ago.
2) A Parma Heights man whose mom died 10 years ago kept her demise a secret so he could cash in on her Social Security checks and retirement fund, according to police, and the truth only came to light after the man suffocated under a pile of hoarded boxes and books. Robert Ellzey, 70, died in March of positional asphyxia. The hoarder was trapped in a pile of his own belongings. Police found his mom's remains in a storage unit.
3) If you're looking for "Midwest Nice" dining you'll want to get a reservation at Cordelia, a new restaurant opening July 20 in the East 4th Street building where Michael Symon's Lola Bistro used to operate. Chef Vinnie Cimino describes the cuisine as "Modern Grandma." If you want to know what that means, read dining editor Douglas Trattner's piece in Cleveland Scene. Cordelia is named for the grandmother of owner Andrew Watts.
4) After 28 years in prison, a judge told Charles Jackson on Monday that he was wrongfully convicted for murder and attempted murder of drug dealers in a case for which there was no evidence against him. Jackson was convicted solely on the testimony of one person. That witness told police she didn't actually see the killer, but police hid that evidence from the defense back in 1991. Jackson is now entitled to more than $50,000 for each year he was wrongly imprisoned.
5) A gallon of gas now costs $4.58 on average in Cleveland, dropping 15.6 cents within the last week, according to data released Monday by GasBuddy. One month ago, gas cost 46.4 cents more. A year ago, gas was $1.63 a gallon less than it is today. Are we finally seeing a downward trend? Maybe not. GasBuddy says we could see another spike in August.
