An Onslow County elementary school went on a two-hour delay Wednesday morning after a portable classroom building caught on fire.

Onslow County Schools Chief Communications Officer Brent Anderson said crews from several fire departments were called to Hunters Creek Elementary School at approximately 6:30 a.m. after hearing reports of a structure fire.

Anderson said the fire was in a portable classroom located behind the main building, so it did not impact the rest of the school. Crews put out the fire and secured the area, but the portable classroom was a total loss.

No one was injured in the fire.

A call was made to students and staff in order to inform them of the fire, and to let them know the school would be on a two-hour delay so crews could check the air quality in the hallways adjacent to the fire, and to give them time to clear the scene.

The Onslow County Fire Marshal and the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the cause of the fire.

"OCS would like to thank the crews who responded to the fire, and the parents and staff of HCES for their flexibility and understanding of the need for a short notice two-hour delay," Anderson said.
