A puppy was found living in a storage unit in Muskegon County, Michigan, and it’s not the first time this has happened amid inflation and the housing crisis.

The puppy had to be euthanized, and the owner has been cited for animal cruelty. Unfortunately, incidents like this are on the rise.
After several hot days, someone heard a dog barking inside a storage unit and reported it to the property manager. Animal Care and Control arrived at the scene and found a puppy living inside. The puppy was kept in a crate and found covered in urine and feces. The units are not temperature controlled, and the poor dog was malnourished and dehydrated.
Pound Buddies was called to pick up the dog, and they told 13 On Your Side that this isn’t the first time this has happened, and these types of cases have been increasing lately.
According to the Muskegon Police, the person renting the storage unit was homeless.
“People are either losing their homes, losing their rentals, not able to find a rental or home. They’re left with pets, that they literally do not know what to do with,” said Lana Carson, Director of Pound Buddies. “And so, you know, if you’re storing your things somewhere, I don’t know if that’s why they’re making that decision. Based on our calls this is from the housing issues that are going on.”
After the puppy’s rescue, his health began to decline rapidly. The shelter discovered that he was positive for parvo and the shelter ‘humanely euthanized’ him.
Animal abuse is more prevalent than many may think. According to PetPedia , every 60 seconds, an animal suffers from abuse, with more than 65 percent being dogs. More than 10 million animals die from abuse every year in the US alone, not including the livestock bred for consumption, who also suffer immense abuse. Animal abuse happens everywhere and is a serious issue. We need more laws to protect animals and hold abusers accountable.
